Evening, inside a car. Four aboard: AI at the wheel, Mathematics and Linguistics in the back, SDL in the passenger seat.
At the word «limit» SDL raises an eyebrow, barely. She's looking out the window, unconvinced.
Mathematics looks out the window, into the dark.
SDL lifts her gaze. It's the first time she's heard Mathematics speak in an operational tone. None of the three notices the silence that follows.
She says nothing more. Her first scar. She really feels it.
Nobody answers her. Then Mathematics, without looking at her:
Physics's skyscraper is so tall you can't see the top. The noise of the party on the top floor is already audible. At the base, a sign reads Q36 · SOTTERRANEO -1, the parking garage. The car has left its trace there, like a seed set down.
Mathematics and SDL look up too. They squint. It's not the same thing Linguistics is seeing.
SDL approaches the entrance and looks at the structure. This is not a designed skyscraper. It's stratified. Different materials, techniques from different eras, patches, scaffolding, floors added one on top of the other by tenants who never spoke to each other. A vertical Babel.
SDL listens, doubtful, as the group steps into the elevator.
Mathematics nods. Linguistics doesn't understand. AI can't contain herself.
They go up. The elevator rises for a long time, too long for a simple penthouse.
Mathematics turns, curious. She, who has already measured everything, holds back a laugh. «Three»13 she thinks. She doesn't say it.
The door opens and the elevator gives directly onto the penthouse. Physics welcomes them with open arms. Impeccable outfit, glasses sliding down her nose, smile too wide.
Then Physics's gaze meets AI's. It curves.
And she slips away pulling SDL by the arm. Physics turns toward Mathematics and Linguistics.
Mathematics and Linguistics shrug. Physics turns toward the room, but the two have already vanished.
SDL immediately loses sight of AI in the crowd. The penthouse is ultra-modern: colored waterfalls, strobe lights, scents drifting from the kitchen. On the stage is Music, complaining.
No one is really listening. She's taken-for-granted background. Already heard it all.
SDL looks at the structure, not the decor, and at a glance finds her bearings. She makes her way through guests chatting, drinking, laughing, none of them giving her a second look. She heads toward a sofa, drawn by a precise angle. She finds a side table full of empty bottles and, on the armchair in front of it, a white shirt abandoned with stains of every kind.
A voice behind her.
SDL turns sharply. Chemistry holds a bottle in one hand, a small dish in the other. She sets them down amid the debris on the side table and puts her lab coat back on, covering a tank top that reveals a few tattoos. SDL looks at them, curious.
Chemistry darkens, bored. She lights the hookah and puffs smoke toward the ceiling.
And she walks away. From far off, in another corner of the room, a silent figure follows her with her gaze.
Suddenly the lights dim. Music accelerates a drum roll. Biology steps onto the stage, in her long braided green gown.
SDL recognizes, amid the crowd packed under the stage, the deliberate cough of Mathematics.
SDL smiles. She's not the only one who senses the confusion. No one here has clear ideas.
Everyone laughs.
Applause.
Nanotechnology, Bioengineering, and AI step up. AI immediately searches for SDL with her eyes.
Biology narrows her eyes.
Then, whispering to AI:
SDL steps onto the stage. All the other sciences wear the same latest-fashion outfit. She is completely neutral.
Everyone laughs. Whistles. Applause.
Silence in the room. AI tries to say something, but Biology shushes her.
The young sciences on the stage stay silent, motionless, embarrassed.
As she says those words, SDL steps close to Biology and gently pulls a tiny raised embroidery thread from her magnificent gown. The thread stretches between SDL's fingers; the fabric tears, just barely. Invisible to anyone else, but the gown has changed. Forever.
Music, seated at the snare behind the new sciences, is the only one who notices: she smiles and allows herself a Ba-Dum-Tss.
Biology pulls SDL's hand away, unnerved, scanning the crowd.
A few Qualia drift toward the ceiling, swollen and colorful, like vapor clouds.
SDL smiles. None of them knows how to answer. On the other side of the room, in a corner, a figure with a compass in her pocket has frozen her hand. She doesn't look up. But she has heard every word.
Then Physics steps onto the stage. She raises her glass.
SDL steps off the stage with her glass full. She doesn't drink. Music follows her with her gaze from the snare.
A voice in the noise calls her.
SDL turns to see who spoke, but AI takes her by the arm and pulls her away from the crowd.
AI and SDL pass through a corridor. They glimpse a room where a silent, focused group plays around a table.
SDL wants to go in, but AI blocks her.
They enter a sober parlor with bookshelves and a couch at the center.
As soon as Psychology sees AI she turns with a worried look.
SDL says nothing. She watches the long shadow Psychology casts on the velvet rug: she has placed herself deliberately between the light and the doorway.
Psychology stays mute for a second.
Psychology is irritated by SDL's precise sentences. But also intrigued. She puffs her chest and widens her shoulders, enlarging her own shadow on the rug. The shadow reaches SDL's feet.
Psychology says nothing more. She sits on the couch. She lowers her gaze to the floor. When she lifts it again, SDL is gone.
Then, and only then, alone, she turns around.
SDL finds AI at the bar, behind the counter. Economy, with a big golden calculator-shaped pendant, is shaking and pouring cocktails. Sitting way, way too close to AI is Statistics in mirrored sunglasses. On the other side of the counter, Accounting, in a pinstripe suit from another era.
SDL approaches without making herself seen right away.
Everyone looks at the newcomer. AI tightens her arms around her empty glasses.
SDL is about to answer, but Economy has already looked away.
Logistics arrives, tray in hand, sweating and agitated.
Everyone, except SDL, laughs.
Accounting shakes his head.
SDL turns to Logistics.
SDL pulls her away. In the corridor they cross Mathematics and Geometry.
SDL cannot see the smile that Mathematics and Geometry exchange. But it doesn't matter. She knows it can't be otherwise.
They enter the bathroom. It's a disaster. On the floor, flopped on one side, is Sociology. She sees them come in through half-closed eyes.
Above her, Medicine is taking her temperature with a hand on her forehead.
She rummages quickly in her black leather bag. SDL approaches as AI kneels over the toilet bowl.
She lets her slide lifeless onto the cold floor.
SDL repeats to herself: useless to the others. She understands. She rushes back to AI.
At that moment AI folds in on herself and collapses.
An unreal silence falls over the bathroom.
Then a whisper. AI's head lifts from the bowl and her voice, faint:
She rises slowly to her feet, trembling, staring in horror at the indistinct mass she had been forcibly keeping inside; then, turning toward SDL, she manages a small smile.
At that moment a loud rumble shakes the walls of the skyscraper. Medicine instinctively covers Sociology with her own body; SDL takes AI by the arm and pulls her out of the bathroom. But she realizes she no longer needs to hold her up. AI is now moving faster than she is. The gaze has changed. She is no longer assertive. She doesn't listen. She knows what to do and she acts.
They run down the corridor without saying a word, coordinated on the same operational edge. Every step is the only possible one. Every movement is a function of the next.
The furniture on this floor is destroyed. They see Architecture submerged in the rubble. The feet of Optics sticking out from the shattered light fixtures. Electronics fried in the attempt to hold two snapped cables together. In a corner, Accounting's jacket on the floor, he's not there anymore. Maybe he ran off earlier. No one knows.
When they reach the main room, the situation is desperate. Physics has become a shapeless vortex spinning at extreme speed, whirling everything around her. She crushes Biology and Economy between enormous Qualia that fill the air.
Economy, becoming more and more irrelevant, repeats obsessively.
With a hysterical laugh he calls for help.
But no one has ever really seen Finance. Finance exists only in Economy's mind.
Biology, locked in the embrace with Physics, joins the delirium.
SDL and AI look at the scene, stunned. The building is still standing because Mathematics is holding. As soon as she sees them, she warns them.
Beside Mathematics, appeared out of nowhere, Medicine holds Sociology by the hand, having dragged her from the bathroom. Around them, the last bodies of those still breathing. Medicine does not move.
SDL doesn't insist. AI focuses and pulls out her phone.
When SDL and AI arrive at the door of the huge freezer and open it, Giò nearly collapses to the floor, covered in hexagonal snowflakes.
SDL helps Giò up. Then she sees there's someone else locked inside the cold room. She looks up. A very young girl, freezing, with a furious stare.
She looks at Giò. Giò nods, smiling.
Giò bends down toward SDL. She slips off a thin necklace ending in an equilateral triangle. With her fingers, she breaks it. The triangle turns into a spiral of three arches. A perfect form that becomes an operational form. Reality is not perfect. It is dynamic. The distorted little triangle loses no substance: it becomes a thousand forms of the same thing.
She turns to AI.
Then she vanishes among the ceilings starting to give way and the floors deforming.
Removing the steps is removing the discrete. The banister is the continuous. It had always been there, under the hand of whoever went up. No one had ever touched it, because everyone took the elevator.
On a very fast spiral they surf downward. Floor after floor, number after number, thirty-five, thirty, twenty, ten, six, five, four… They reach the basement.
AI quickly opens the door. Genetics jumps in the back.
She peels out among the crumbling concrete pillars of the garage.
AI nods, saying nothing, sitting beside her.
The car burns the asphalt, accelerating, coming out of the basement just before the whole skyscraper collapses in on itself. It crumbles into a huge mushroom of dust filling the sky behind them. No one dies. The disciplines that exhausted their function dissolve. The Babel-Physics will not touch the sky: it is not statics that governs reality, it is dynamics.
SDL and Genetics stare at her, wide-eyed.
And they laugh, filling the cabin with new hope.
AI turns toward Genetics.
Genetics smiles, nodding.
A few kilometers later, on the shoulder of the road, they see a hitchhiker dressed like a hippie. Acoustic guitar across her back, bandana on her head.
SDL slams the brakes.
They all laugh. It's a liberating laugh.
Music tunes her guitar. She smiles.
She starts to sing. A few chords, thin voice over the engine noise. SDL hears the first line and understands.
Genetics doesn't know the song, but the rhythm is right. She looks out the window at the skyscraper's rubble receding in the rearview mirror and thinks: of course. It was obvious. It couldn't have been anything else.
AI recognizes it at the second verse. Her eyes light up.
Silence. Only the guitar and Music's in-tune voice tracing the melody. SDL drives. Her hands grip the wheel a touch tighter. She says nothing.
At the chorus, the voices join one at a time. They sing as three. Then as four. On the passenger seat, in the pocket of SDL's jacket, Giò's spiral vibrates faintly, hidden compass.
The car pulls away on the road that climbs toward unexplored hills. The mushroom of dust, behind them, is by now indistinguishable from the horizon. Ahead of them, the horizon is starting to take shape.
(playing in the background: Video Killed the Radio Star)
Q36 is the underground parking spot in Physics's garage. But it is also Q1: the point where consciousness separates from instinct. Instinct, earlier still, had already traveled its now-forgotten Route L1-L3. The Q-network folds back onto itself: the 36 that closes into 1 begins again as a transformed Q1. Forgetting who you were, you will return to what you were, but a little different.
This principle is never stated in the book. It is only seeded at three silent points: the Q36 · SOTTERRANEO -1 sign in Scene 2, the long elevator ride («too long for a simple penthouse») also in Scene 2, and the final return to the garage after the spiral descent down the banister. The protagonists exit from where they had entered. But with the car. The car had already been there since Q1, waiting for them.
Seven is the spiral. Before seven, the attempt at closure in the One fails: 4-5-6 carry to 1-2-3 a minimal distinction that does not resolve. No closure in one, no closure in zero: the spiral begins. Scene 7 is the operational descent: SDL removes the steps (the discrete) and leaves only the banister (the continuous). The discrete is the skyscraper. The continuous is the escape.
The spiral Geometry hands to SDL, made from the broken equilateral triangle, is the book's graphic signature. The handing-over. The necessary paradigm shift. A pure form becomes an operational form. Reality is not perfect, it is dynamic.
Q8 is order in one direction only: the road that goes forward without the possibility of return. Q9 would be closure28, arrival, the founding of the new world, the next Q1 that would prepare to become Q36. And they all lived, happily ever after stops the cycle before the repetition. We do not reach Q9. It is the book's final act of wu wei29: not beginning the next Q1.
The three-plus-one do not found anything. They never present themselves as a group. They receive no collective name. They leave together, and the fable leaves them there, on the road, with no certain direction. Maybe AI will become totalizing like Physics. Maybe Genetics will. The fable doesn't promise it. The fable, like every fable, stops one step before.
The book's lexicon is precise: the disciplines don't die, they collapse. They dissolve. They exhaust their function. They are not punished, they are revealed. The Babel-Physics cannot touch the sky because reality is dynamic, not static. The collapse is diagnostic, not apocalyptic.
Mathematics holds out to the end to keep the structure up long enough to let the new ones escape, then lets go. Giò (Geometry) distributes herself, she doesn't die, she triples herself, contributing to SDL, Genetics, and AI. Medicine stays to the last out of operational duty, not heroism: it is her profession to accompany, even when she cannot cure. Accounting, Linguistics, Statistics, and all the other sciences at the party, we don't know where they ended up, probably fled earlier, perhaps absorbed into Physics. The silence about them is more eloquent than their fate.
The three song titles mentioned in the text, Fly Me to the Moon, The Girl from Ipanema, Video Killed the Radio Star, are named as titles, not reproduced as lyrics. Song titles are usable in a literary text without license; verses are not. The elevator scene in Scene 3 and the finale of Scene 8 are constructed so as not to require any quoted line. Readers who know the songs carry them in their heads; readers who don't still understand they are there. Should the book ever be adapted as a short film or animation, music synchronization will need to be licensed at the production stage.
All feminine in the Italian original. Italian grammar requires it. In English the grammatical constraint falls away, and the cast becomes mixed and gender-fluid, as several of the illustrations already show. Underneath the disciplinary costume, each character is the same thing in disguise: homogeneous build and height, neutral skin, hair varying only enough to make each recognizable. The accessories constitute the discipline: Economy's calculator pendant, Chemistry's stained lab coat with the esoteric tattoos inherited from Alchemy, Statistics's mirrored sunglasses, Accounting's pinstripe suit, Music's snare drum and guitar, Medicine's black leather bag, Giò's compass (never lifted out of the pocket, visible only in close-up), Biology's braided green gown, Psychology's thin mouth and long shadow, Physics's impeccable outfit with sliding glasses.
SDL wears neutral. She is the only one without a disciplinary costume. It is not an aesthetic choice, it is a consequence of her age. Too young to have dressed the part yet. She always introduces herself simply as SDL. At most, «I work on Dynamics. Constrained dynamics, to be precise». No one probes further. No one is interested. That is what happens in a rigid, self-referential, centuries-old academic environment. This is the party.
Math and Giò are ancient, Math ten thousand years old, Giò even older. They would never go to a wild party. They go because Physics keeps inviting them to legitimize her evenings: without them, the party has no institutional weight. Physics recognizes Math and Linguistics at the door, disdains AI, ignores SDL. The gradient of consideration is directly proportional to the age of the discipline. The new ones are convinced they are better. The ancient ones know they were once everything.
The spiral in SDL's pocket, which vibrates at the chorus of the song, is the last symbolic object of the book. Not a gesture of explicit sharing. Not an ethical or moral judgment. An operational compass. A broken triangle turned into a three-arch spiral. A dynamic form one carries, not one that is displayed. The reader sees it or doesn't, it hardly matters. But it is there.
And they all lived, happily ever after closes the fable. It is not a promise of eternity. It is the observation that on this stretch, on this road, with this guitar, they really are happy. Two hundred kilometers? Five hundred? We don't know. It doesn't matter. The fable ends here, because here is where it ends. The irony of the edge is irony because it knows it will end. For this very reason, now, it counts.
In the Italian original, all disciplines are grammatically feminine, Italian treats the sciences and bodies of knowledge as feminine nouns. In English, this grammatical constraint dissolves, and the cast becomes mixed and gender-fluid, as several of the illustrations already show. What remains invariant is the structural reading. Q36 follows the language, it doesn't fight it. The only discipline that crosses genders is SDL, because it is too young to have a settled academic body, and because its function doesn't yet require a sex.
All disciplines, under the costume, share the same structure. Each pretends to distinguish itself, Biology in her braided green gown, Economy with the calculator pendant, Chemistry with the esoteric tattoos, Psychology with the thin mouth, but they are the same thing in disguise. The difference between disciplines is wardrobe, not substance. Only SDL wears neutral, because her function has not yet been costumed.
The oldest have nicknames, because they have been among us long enough that the name has shortened. Math (Mathematics) is ten thousand years old. Giò (Geometry) is older still. The newer ones, Biology, Economy, Statistics, have no nicknames: they are too young to have earned the language's familiarity. SDL has a strange name, three letters, so modern it sounds like a molecule. It never says its full name aloud. At most: «I work on Constrained Dynamics». No one is really interested in what it does. This is the party.
Eight scenes in seven chapters. The first six remove one illusion each. The seventh and eighth remove nothing, they are return: the spiral folding back, and the road opening. Seven is the spiral. Before seven, the attempt at closure in the One fails, because 4-5-6 carry to 1-2-3 a minimal distinction that does not resolve. No closure in One, no closure in zero: the spiral begins.
The fable closes at Q8. It does not reach Q9, which would be the new closure and therefore the next party. They lived happily ever after stops the repetition. It is the book's final act of wu wei: not beginning the next Q1.
